Encompassing the northern end of the Maryland ocean coastline, Ocean City stretches ten miles north from the Ocean City Inlet to the Delaware state line. Directly to the south lies a coastal chain of barrier islands that lie along the coast for more than 70 miles to Cape Charles in Virginia. The largest of these islands is Assateague, which at one time was connected to the current Ocean City land mass until a 1933 hurricane carved the Inlet. Ocean City lies close to the central latitude of the Delmarva peninsula, a huge land mass that includes all of Delaware plus the eastern shores of Maryland and Virginia which are separated on the west from the mainland by the Chesapeake Bay. In Colonial times, the warm temperatures and related moisture made the Delmarva ideal for farming often allowing for two crops a year. The coastal location also made an ideal place for fishing. Later, the proximity to the nations capital made Ocean City a perfect choice for city dwellers to take advantage of the beaches. In the latter half of the 19th century, the resort town became a true vacation destination.

Whether an active group looking for fun in the sun or nature lovers who want to walk in quiet reflection, this vacation spot has something for everyone. Ocean City offers the best of both worlds, with ten miles of wide sandy beaches full of activities, restaurants and outdoor attractions; just to the south across the Inlet lies the pristine, quiet beaches and natural beauty of Assateague Island, a protected Atlantic Seashore. Only 15 minutes from each other, these two destinations may be accessed by car or by a nature cruise. Famous for the wild ponies that roam the island, Assateague takes center stage in July when the Chincoteague Pony Swim and Auction takes place just across the border in Virginia. Families from around the country come to see the events that were made popular by the book and film, “Misty of Chincoteague.”

Visitors can enjoy a wide range of outdoor activities and attractions. Ocean City is nicknamed the “White Marlin Capital of the World” and is a popular sports fishing destination. The location is close to merging off-shore currents which swells a fisherman’s possibilities of catching the big one! In-shore, bay, deep sea, trolling and surf casting are all popular fishing methods. Watersports for every level of competence can be found here. From wind and kite surfing on the Bay, surf boarding on the ocean, dolphin encounters, parasailing and jet skiing over the waves, the watery attractions of Ocean City seems endless. Eco-tourism is another popular outdoor attraction, whether it’s kayaking the Bay, local rivers or touring of the coastal islands, it is all an adventure.
